This section will give you a brief overview on single supply pipes, their ownership and functionality. A single supply pipe is a pipe that carries water from the water main to a single property. Most modern properties will have a separate supply pipe whilst older properties may be on a common supply.
Most single supply pipes will enter the property boundary direct from the public highway; however there are a small number that pass through the land of adjacent properties.
Single supply pipes are made of varying materials, with some older properties having lead pipes, whilst more modern or renovated properties have plastic pipes. Those properties with lead pipes can replace their pipes, (see replacing lead pipes section).
Ownership for maintenance of the pipes is split between United Utilities and the property owner. United Utilities is responsible for the single supply pipe from the connection to the water main up-to where the pipe leaves the public highway. The property owner is responsible for the remainder of the single supply pipe.
