Created together with Wigan Education Business Partnership, the centre provides facilities for Key Stage 2 pupils to take part in water and environment, and electricity awareness programmes.
The centre comprises of two renovated barns on our 42 acre Hope Carr nature reserve, where we offer a range of activities that enhance the National Curriculum. This allows students the opportunity to study in the local environment around them.
The Key Stage 2 water and environment programme features a specially devised session on the water cycle including water safety and water conservation. Pupils can take part in science experiments including designing a mini water filter. Outdoors the pupils will trek on an eco-trail to solve questions about energy, recycling and water conservation, and play games to raise awareness of climate change as a global and local issue. This programme is the ideal progression to the Act on Climate Change programme, available from Worthington Lakes education centre
The one day programme enhances the Y6 science curriculum; Changing Circuits Unit 6G, through learning by doing. The programme raises safety awareness and introduces work related learning in a fun and structured timetable. Pupils will predict and test materials as conductors and insulators, investigate series and parallel circuit characteristics, increase their understanding of electrical symbols, circuit diagrams and much more. Work related learning is also introduced through an interactive role play highlighting the jobs of the key workers maintaining the system with a focus on engineering skills.
