Our Haweswater estate comprises 26,000 acres of land, woodland and water and is situated almost entirely within and the Lake District National Park. There are several princpal valleys which make up the estate which are Wet Sleddale, Swindale, Haweswater and Heltondale. All the estate land is used for water gathering with Haweswater reservoir serves a significant portion of our North West customers with drinking water.
The main industry on the estate is hill farming of sheep and suckler cattle and fifteen of these farms are owned by us but let to tenants. Despite the extensive farming in the area there are many access areas, public rights of way and permissive paths giving access to the fells and common land to the west of the estate.
The area is described in the Lake District National Park Plan as an area for quiet enjoyment and for this reason it remains quite undeveloped as an access area. It is particularly suited therefore to the seasoned rambler or fell walker.
The RSPB manages our Naddle Forest which is a nature reserve and site of special scientific interest. It also manages a viewing platform for the Eagles in Riggindale also in the Haweswater valley. The estate is rich in heritage and archaeology.
