Cleaning and maintainance projects

The Dee trunk main

The Dee trunk mains have operated since the 1960s and supplies up to 369 million litres of water a day to over 1.7 million customers in parts of Cheshire and Merseyside.  Due to the scale of this project cleaning work has been split into two phases.  Phase one started in 2007 and was successfully completed in 2008.  Work on phase two is underway and is expected to be complete by 2014.

The Hodder trunk main

The Hodder trunk mains are a major source of supply to Blackpool and the Fylde coast.  The Hodder system has operated since the 1920s and supplies over 520,000 customers.  The cleaning works were completed in April 2010.

The Lancashire Conjunctive Use Scheme (LCUS) trunk main

The Lancashire Conjunctive Use Scheme (LCUS) trunk main supplies over 560,000 customers in the Preston area.  It was opened in 1980 and allows water abstracted from the rivers Lune and Wyre and from boreholes in the Fylde to be used in conjunction with Lake District sources.  Planning work for cleaning began in 2006 and the project was completed in 2011.

The Manchester ring main

The Manchester ring main first opened in the late 1960s and now supplies over 2 million customers.  Cleaning work began in 2008 but due to the scale of this project it has been split up into six phases and is due for completion by 2013.
