What is the carbon impact of my water usage?

We think it is really important that our customers are aware of how much water they use, how much it costs and the environmental impact of using that water. There are some really good reasons for this including helping customers to reduce the size of their water bill and protecting our water supplies, particularly as they come under pressure from the impacts of climate change. By encouraging people to use less water we can reduce our carbon footprint by reducing the energy we emit in treating and distributing water and customers can reduce their carbon footprint by reducing the amount of water heated in the home.

We have created a water consumption calculator to help customers understand how much water is used in their home, and where it is used. If your water bill is higher or lower than you think it should be, or have recently switched to a water meter and are paying more than you expected, the calculator will help you work out how much water you are actually using.

The calculator also works out the carbon value of this water use (including energy used to heat the water where applicable) and gives the customer an understanding of the degree of carbon emissions directly related to water usage in the home. We ask questions about how much water you use, for example how many toilet flushes a day, then we calculate the total water consumption for your household and convert this into the cost and the carbon impact.
