Reducing water leaks in Runcorn

Reducing water leaks in Runcorn

11 August 2010

Our engineers will be replacing old, leak-prone metal pipes with modern new plastic equivalents in Runcorn next week.

The company will be working in Stone Barn Lane from Monday (August 9) to replace the cast iron water pipes, some of which are decades old.

The work is part of a £3 million investment scheme to replace old water pipes in Runcorn. The programme began two years ago, and will finisish in 2011.

John Maher, project coordintator said: "The old pipes have reached the end of their useful life. Their age makes them more prone to leaks, and replacing them is an important way of saving water.

"The work in Stone Barn Lane is part of a major ongoing programme to upgrade water pipes across the area. The investment will mean a more reliable water supply for customers, and less water wastage."

To get the job done with a minimum of inconvenience, engineers will be using a clever techique called 'sliplining', which involves pushing plastic pipes through the existing metal water mains.

"It means less holes in the road," confirmed John. "The old metal pipes remain in the ground, but the water travels through the new plastic pipes within. It allows us to get the job done more quickly, which is good news for local residents."
