Wirral water supplies update: Saturday, May 22 (6pm)

22 May 2010

Engineers have rectified intermittent water supplies affecting 1,900 customers in Wallasey Village earlier today.

Scott Beard, United Utilities' Regional Water Network Manager, said: "Firstly we would like to apologise sincerely for the inconvenience caused to customers in the Wallasey Village area.

"Our crew on-site has been working throughout the morning to provide alternative supplies.

"Water is now flowing from customers' taps.

"We also have additional resources - should they be required - to assist us with maintaining these supplies.

"The repair of the valve is a highly complex job and requires specialist contractors - as well as our own maintenance crews.

"However, due to the valve's close proximity to overhead high-voltage electricity cables - and the resulting health and safety implications - this has slowed our progress.

"We are now hoping to have this work completed by Tuesday next week.

"The current supply arrangements will remain in place until we are in a position to revert back to normal operations.

"We have been updating local authorities and Wirral Borough Council on our progress and we thank customers for bearing with us whilst this work is ongoing."

Bottled water was made available whilst work was carried out to divert water in the network to the affected area.
