Liver Street to be closed overnight for water works
05 March 2010
Liver Street will be closed for three consecutive evenings next week (Monday, March 8 - Wednesday, March 10) so ongoing work to improve the city centre's water mains can progress.
This will only affect access into Liver Street from The Strand.
Engineers working on behalf of United Utilities on the £35 million project need to close the road so that old cast-iron water pipes situated at the junction of Liver Street and Park Lane can be accessed and safely replaced with modern plastic ones, which will improve the overall reliability of the network and reduce leakage.
John Maher, United Utilities' Project Engineer, explained: "This area is busy with traffic during the daytime and therefore it is not safe or practical for our engineers to carry out the necessary work without implementing a road closure.
"We did not want to do this as we appreciate that this would have caused significant disruption during the daytime.
"We have worked closely with the local council to make arrangements to close access from the Strand into Liver Street from 7pm to 6am on the three evenings we need to carry out work on this section of the scheme.
"The closure will be removed each morning at 6am and the works will complete by 6am on Thursday, March 11.
"We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause."
The John Lewis car park will be open for business as usual with full access and exiting maintained during this work.
