Our ongoing work to improve Warrington town centre's water supply will start at the bottom of Bridge Street from Monday, March 1.

Our project has seen engineers replacing old cast-iron water pipes with modern plastic ones to strengthen the overall reliability of the network, reduce leakage and improve water pressure.

The project, which is part of our £2.9 billion water quality and environmental improvement programme for 2005-2010, has been carefully co-ordinated in liaison with Warrington Borough Council's highways department.

Engineers will be replacing old water mains from outside property numbers 137 to 47.

The work is expected to take four weeks to complete.

During this time Bridge Street will be closed to through traffic, but access for pedestrians will be maintained at all times as well as for taxis dropping off and collecting customers and deliveries to businesses.

Keith Saltmarsh, United Utilities' Project Engineer, said: "This work is essential in safeguarding Warrington town centre's water supply and providing a network which is suitable for the 21st century and beyond.

"The old cast-iron pipes have done a wonderful job providing water to the town for many years, but we must look to the future.

"We are using the latest engineering techniques to keep disruption to a minimum, but we do appreciate that our temporary road closure may cause some inconvenience.

"We will endeavour to work as quickly as possible to deliver these improvements, which will ensure that the town's high-quality tap water will continue to flow for many more years to come."
