Water improvements in the pipeline for Toxteth

26 February 2010

Continued improvements to old cast-iron water mains in Lark Lane, Toxteth will soon get under way thanks to diligence in ensuring all the old mains in the area have been replaced.

We started work in the area a few years back - giving the old pipes a modern makeover by replacing them with plastic ones.

The work - which is part of our £2.9 billion water quality and environmental improvement programme for 2005-2010 - is designed to reinforce the reliability of the local water network and improve pressure.

Henry Bennett, Project Engineer, said: "Most of our work in the area is complete apart from a short section on Lark Lane (approximately 130m)

"This section of main has to be installed as new due to the location of the existing water main; this will mean having to set up traffic lights to allow a new main to be open-cut in the carriageway.

"The work is due to start on-site on Monday, March 1 and is expected to take up to two weeks to complete.

"We have taken very serious thought about disrupting trade in the area to do this work and has delayed it for as long as it's been possible.

"This section of main has done a great job serving supplies to the area for many years, but due to our commitment to improving water quality to local residents it is time to replace this section of pipe.

"This work will ensure the network continues to do its job for many more years to come.

"We will be using the latest engineering techniques to replace the pipes, which will minimise any inconvenience caused by reducing the number of holes we need to dig in roads and footpaths."

In order for the work to be carried out safely temporary traffic management will be put in place, which will include two-way traffic lights along Lark Lane from outside property number 155 Lark Lane to outside number 60 Lark Lane.

Due to the location of the mains there will be some parking restrictions along the even numbered side of properties on Lark Lane.

"We would like to apologise in advance for any short-term inconvenience this work may cause," said Henry.

"We will do our best to assist local residents wherever possible."
