Southport water works will result in week-long road closure

09 February 2010

Riding Street in Southport will soon be closed for one week for essential water mains improvements.

United Utilities has been working in Southport to replace old cast-iron water mains with modern plastic ones as part of an ongoing commitment to improve water supplies in the area and safeguard the network for long-term use.

The closure on Riding Street - which is expected be implemented on Monday, February 22 - has been agreed in liaison with the local council.

Henry Bennett, United Utilities' Project Engineer, said: "Our work is designed to improve water quality in Southport and reduce the risk of leakage on the local network.

"Our engineers need to carry out some final connection work at the junction of Bridge Street and Eastbank Street.

"In order to do this safely we need to close Riding Street.

"Diversion routes will be clearly signposted to direct traffic around the working area and pedestrian access will be maintained at all times."

United Utilities representatives will be on-site to discuss individual access needs and assist residents temporarily affected by the works wherever possible.

"We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience this work may cause," added Henry.

"We have done everything possible to minimise disruption for our customers, which has included revising this programme of work with the local council to avoid the busy summer season and thus minimise the impact it would have on local businesses.

"We do appreciate however that the closure of Riding Street may cause some disruption and we thank our customers for their continued patience and understanding."
