Sewer improvements set to start

15 January 2010

United Utilities will soon be starting work in Mill Avenue as part of a wider programme to alleviate sewer flooding to 69 properties in Great Sankey and Penketh.

Engineers working on behalf of the Warrington-based water company will start on site on Monday, January 18.

The work, which is expected to approximately six months to complete, is the second of two phases.

The first phase of began in November 2009 and has involved work to increase the size of the surface water sewer and form a new outlet to Whittle Brook.

The site compound currently occupied off Mill Avenue will be retained during phase two, which will involve work to construct a new sewer along Mill Avenue from outside property number eight to number 34.

Pedestrian access past working areas will be maintained at all times, but there may be times when vehicle access will not be possible to some properties.

Efforts will be made however to minimise the effects of this inconvenience.

Phase two will also see the construction of an underground storm water storage tank on land off Phillips Drive.

Temporary vehicle access for construction traffic will be formed off Phillips Drive opposite Snowdon Close.

Steve Knowles, United Utilities' Senior Project Manager, said: "Our extensive programme of work for the Great Sankey and Penketh areas is designed to do everything possible to alleviate the unpleasant problem of sewer flooding and give the residents it affects some well-deserved peace of mind.

"Whilst the construction works will cause some temporary disruption, we would ask that people please bear with us until these essential works are completed.

"We will do everything possible to keep disruption levels to a minimum and we thank residents for their patience and understanding."

A dedicated website page has been set up for all the sewer improvement work being carried out in Great Sankey and Penketh at unitedutilities.com/sewerimprovements

This site, which includes a short film about sewer flooding and what is being done to help customers, will be updated with all the latest information.

Customers living in the area will continue to be updated by letter.

United Utilities has also set up a dedicated phone number - 01925 670 383 - which is available Monday to Friday from 8am-8pm for people to find out more information about the programme of work.
