Essential road closure - Castle Street, Kendal
06 November 2009
Essential sewer repairs will mean the temporary closure of Castle Street in Kendal for up to seven days from Monday November 9.
United Utilities engineers need to close the road - the A684 - between the junctions of Gandy Street and Ann Street from approximately 9am.
Diversions for traffic will be in place via Sandylands Road, although the road will remain open to pedestrians and dismounted cyclists.
The closure will be vital to allow investigations into the cause of a depression in the road surface and will allow trial holes and a camera survey to take place safely.
Meanwhile at the other end of the town, water engineers are installing a new water main on the town's A6 Romney Road. Two way traffic lights between the Romney roundabout and Park Avenue junction are expected to stay in place until November 14. Once this section of work is complete, teams will begin installing pipework in residential streets. Work will start at the southern end of Glebe Road on November 16 and will move northwards along Anchorite Fields until Christmas.
Network manager Eric McDonald apologised to people for the temporary closure of Castle Street.
"We appreciate it will be inconvenient but it's vital we find out what's wrong with the sewer there and put the road surface back to rights. Our aim is to carry out the work as quickly as possible so that, if possible, we can re-open the road sooner rather than later.
"Utility services are something we all tend to take forgranted but from time to time, like any equipment, they need repairs and maintenance. Our work now will help guarantee they continue to provide the same safe service the people of Kendal have enjoyed for decades."
