Update on sewer works near Ambleside

03 November 2009

Long-running road works on the A593 near Ambleside are moving into their final stages.

On November 9, engineers building a new main sewer in Clappersgate will install three-way traffic lights at the junction with the B5286 Hawkshead road as work laying the final 30m section of pipe gets underway.

Work in the road way is expected to last three weeks, after which it will move into private land. Final connection works for the sewer, and also for a replacement water pipeline which has been built at the same time, will need to be carried out after Christmas.

The project is being carried out by United Utilities so that local homes and businesses can move off poorly performing septic tanks which are polluting nearby watercourses. It is part of the company's current £2.9 billion five-year programme to improve water quality and the environment across the North West.

To try to minimise disruption, engineers will be working on Saturdays. The project was originally due to finish earlier this year, but has been hampered by unexpectedly difficult ground conditions.

"This has been a difficult scheme to construct and we appreciate the patience of local people. Please bear with us for the last few weeks of work and we will be finished as soon as we can. We are nearing the end and hopefully soon it will be the benefits people remember, rather than the disruption," said project co-ordinator, Jerry McCarthy.
