Mab Lane sewer scheme enters next phase

Mab Lane sewer scheme enters next phase

14 October 2009

Essential work to relieve sewer flooding in Mab Lane, West Derby will soon be entering its next phase.

United Utilities is building an underground storage tank in land adjacent to Mab Lane - which is designed to capture excess water during heavy rainfall - and laying an additional 1,100 metres of pipeline as part of an £8 million investment plan to improve the reliability of Liverpool's sewer network.

The project, which started in May, will enter its third phase on Monday, October 21.

The phase, which is expected to take approximately four weeks to complete, will see engineers lay two separate sewer pipes across Mab Lane.

The first pipe will be laid from Dumbrees Road across Mab Lane and into nearby playing fields.

The second pipe will be laid from outside property number 34 Mab Lane into the playing fields.

Whilst this work is ongoing a single lane closure will be in place, which will be controlled by two-way traffic lights.

Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times during this work.

Carly Ratcliffe, United Utilities' Project Manager, said: "This essential work will be of great benefit to the properties which, in the past, have experienced the distress and inconvenience caused by sewer flooding.

"We have been working closely with the local council and 2020 Liverpool to keep both the traffic management and visual impact to the community woodland to an absolute minimum.

"We will also continue to communicate with customers directly as work progresses and we will endeavour to carry out our work as quickly and efficiently as possible."

This scheme is part of United Utilities' £2.9 billion water quality and environmental improvement programme for 2005-2010.
