City centre water works flow on to Copperas Hill
04 September 2009
A £35 million project to improve water supplies serving businesses in Liverpool city centre is progressing well thanks to United Utilities.
Engineers working on behalf of the water company started to replace old cast-iron water pipes with modern plastic ones along Copperas Hill this week.
John Maher, United Utilities' Project Engineer, said: "Our work has started just past Hawke Street and will continue up past the junction of Skelhorne Street.
"We will then continue along Copperas Hill and finish at the junction with Russell Street.
"This work, which will improve the reliability of the local network and reduce the risk of leakage, is expected to take approximately three weeks to complete."
During this work vehicle access down Copperas Hill will be restricted and a partial one-way system up Copperas Hill will be put in place for part of the works.
The parking bays along Copperas Hill will also be temporarily suspended whilst these essential works are carried out.
Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.
"We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience this work may cause," said John.
"This is one of the many projects our customers' bills help to fund and the long-term improvements it will deliver to Liverpool city centre's water supply will more than compensate for the short-term inconvenience."
This work is part of United Utilities' £2.9 billion water quality and environmental improvement programme for 2005-2010.
