Liverpool water works in full flow

12 August 2009

An ongoing scheme to replace old cast-iron water pipes on Walton Lane, Liverpool is progressing well thanks to United Utilities.

The work, which is part of the water company's £2.9 billion water quality and environmental improvement programme for 2005-2010, will see engineers begin the scheme's next phase on Monday, August 17.

Henry Bennett, United Utilities' Project Engineer, said: "We will be replacing a water pipe running between Tetlow Way and Walton Lane, which we expect to have completed by August 31.

"Due to the location of some of the existing water pipes however we will be working in a number of locations.

"As such we will need to close Langham Street at the junction of Walton Lane for the duration of this work.

"A fully signposted diversion route will be in place for all residential and commercial access in order to minimise disruption.

"Pedestrian access will also be maintained at all times."

Engineers are using the latest techniques to replace the pipe, which minimises the number of holes needed in roads and footpaths.

Henry added: "Whilst we appreciate that the road closure will cause some temporary disruption, our methods to replace the pipe are the most efficient in the engineering industry.

"This scheme is part of our ongoing commitment to improve the quality of the region's water supply and reduce the risk of leakage."
