City centre water work moves on to Clarence Street
20 July 2009
Engineers working on behalf of United Utilities to replace old water pipes in Liverpool city centre will soon be turning their attention to Clarence Street.
The company has invested £35 million into improving water supplies serving businesses in Liverpool as part of its £2.9 billion water quality and environmental improvement programme for 2005-2010.
On Thursday, July 23 work will commence on Clarence Street to replace old pipes with modern plastic ones.
The road will need to be closed for the work to be carried out due to the existing location of the pipes.
Work is expected to take one week to complete.
John Maher, United Utilities' Project Engineer, said: "We are continuing to replace old cast-iron water mains in Liverpool to improve water quality and reduce leakage.
"We are using the latest engineering techniques to thread the new pipes through the old ones.
"Whilst the road closure is in place we will ensure that diversion routes are clearly signposted on-site so traffic can be directed around the working area.
"Vehicle access will be available via the junction with Mount Pleasant, but there will be no vehicle access from Brownlow Hill.
"Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.
"Once work is completed we will reopen the road.
"We apologise for any short-term inconvenience this essential work may cause."
