Cleaning and maintainance projects

The Dee trunk main

The Dee trunk main has operated since the 1960s and supplies up to 369 million litres of water a day to over 1.7 million customers in parts of Cheshire and Merseyside.  The work will start in 2007 and is due for completion by January 2010.

The Hodder trunk main

The Hodder trunk main is a major source of supply to Blackpool and the Fylde coast.  The Hodder main has operated since the 1920s and supplies over 520,000 customers.  Work is planned to start in late 2006 and will be finished by December 2009.

The Lancashire Conjunctive Use Scheme (LCUS) trunk main

The Lancashire Conjunctive Use Scheme (LCUS) trunk main supplies over 560,000 customers in the Preston area.  Work is due to begin in late 2006 and is due for completion by March 2010.  The LCUS was opened in 1980 and allows water abstracted from the rivers Lune and Wyre and from boreholes in the Fylde to be used in conjunction with Lake District sources.

The Manchester ring main

The Manchester ring main first opened in the late 1960s and now supplies over 2 million customers.  Cleaning of this main will begin in 2008 with the project due for completion by March 2013.

The Vyrnwy trunk main

The Vyrnwy trunk main takes treated water from Oswestry water treatment works to parts of Cheshire and Merseyside.  This is the longest of our large diameter trunk mains at a length of 80km and supplies over 900,000 customers.  Cleaning is due to start in 2010 with completion scheduled for March 2013.

The Rivington trunk main

The Rivington trunk main moves water in either direction between Rivington water treatment works and the Liverpool area supplying over 610,000 customers.  Works are scheduled to begin in 2013 with a completion date of March 2014.

Thirlmere and Haweswater aqueducts

Both the Thirlmere and Haweswater aqueducts are to be taken out of service to allow us to carry out a survey of their current condition and identify any repairs that may be necessary.  This work is crucial if we are to ensure that both aqueducts can continue to provide large amounts of water from the Lake District well into the future. We plan to carry out inspections of both aqueducts between 2006-2008.
